People love music festivals because they get the opportunity to see multiple bands in one location.  Sometimes, they are lucky enough to see groups of musicians come together for unique collaborations.  That happened last month when the Foo Fighters and The Black Keys joined Neil Young on stage.

At the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith joined The Avett Brothers for a performance of Paul Newman Vs The Demons.  The is featured on the band's new album The Carpenter.  But, the collaboration makes sense.  Smith was the drummer on the song on the album.  He also contributed to Live and Die and Down With The Shine.

Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Avett Brothers share a producer.  Rick Rubin has produced the Avetts' last two albums and he has produced every Chili Peppers album since 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

So, when Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Avett Brothers are on the same bill, it only makes sense that Smith would step in on drums, especially on the aternative rock sounding Paul Newman.
